It is fair to assert that Frankincense does not so much complicate Romanticist conventions of individualism and creativity as build upon the foundations set down by preceding literary texts. The constant references to other texts is emphatic of the observation that Shelley does not claim all the ideas in the novel to be her own, but draws upon their finer points and deeper philosophical meanings. We can also think about writing within a conversation. You can write to summarize a conversation in order to understand it. You can write to enter a conversation, or to add to an existing one. Other strategies that the company initiated within its stores included installation of solar panels, purchasing of wind energy and adoption of fuel saving technologies in its transport system. As a result of these strategies, the company has significantly reduced the cases of illnesses due to pollution especially in its neighborhoods. Thus sustainability program is an effective initiative that the Walmart Company should continue to uphold. Another aspect that has been initiated by the company is the use of recycla ble bags that its consumers can use regularly. In this way, land fill wastes have been effectively reduced. Social responsibilities Based on the need to improve the financial position of its customers, Walmart is focused at empowering women by providing them with investment skills. For example, the company has established Walmart foundation, an initiative that trains more than 1 million women on career opportunities and how to create self employment (Nelson, 2009). In my opinion, this is an effective CSR strategy. This is based on the fact that women are major consumers of Walmart products. Thus by making them earn higher income, they will have significant purchasing power thus making them purchase more from the store. Local responsibility Walmart Company has adopted various programs that include school nutrition as well as offering disaster relief. With the current changes in the style of consumption globally, consumers have been affected by various illnesses that have attracted th e attention of health care providers. Epic Characteristics of Paradise Lost Paradise Lost is one of the finest examples of epic tradition in all of literature. In composing this work, John Milton was, for the most part, following in the manner of epic poets of past centuries. By knowing the background of epic characteristics and conventions, it is easy to trace their presence in Book I of Paradise Lost. One of the biggest questions that a reader must face is that of the hero; exactly who is the epic hero in the poem? While Satan may not be the "hero" of Paradise Lost, Milton quickly establishes him as its main character, and as the most complex and detailed of Milton's descriptions. Satan is given many traditional attributes as an epic hero. Although he may not be the classical hero, he does defeat the creatures that God had created. This is why I feel that Milton meant Satan to be the hero of Paradise Lost. Another three characteristics of the epic are hardly items of debate, as was the hero. The setting of the poem is indeed vast in scope. It ranged from Heaven to Hell and to the Earth. The action of the story also consisted of deeds of great valor that required superhuman courage. Although biblically, we may not consider Satan to have courage, we know that he must have shown it while fighting the war in heaven against God. According to the dictionary, courage is "that quality of mind which shows itself in facing danger without fear or shrinking." Satan most certainly may be said to fit this description. There were also supernatural forces at work throughout the poem, such as gods, angels, and demons. In addition to these four epic characteristics, Milton also employees the so-called epic conventions in his poem. Milton definitely begins b... ...the hive†¦" (lines768+). These similes are Milton's way of helping us to better relate the story to common things in our lives. In spite of some alterations and modifications, we can clearly see how Milton used the classical epic characteristics and conventions in his writing. It was by employing these methods in to an already well known story that Milton created a masterpiece. Francis C. Blessington seems to sum it up the best. "Milton built his epic out of those of Homer and Virgil, like a cathedral erected out of the ruins of pagan temples whose remains can still me seen" (xiii). Tim Burton is a director; he has directed and produced many films which are strange and out of the ordinary. The films, including Batman and Beetle juice have a distinctive genre, fantasy. Johnny Depp is renowned for his extraordinary parts in films, but he is at his best here playing a role he understands as well as anyone, an outcast. From past films we the audience can expect a film with a fantasy storyline. The film promises a magical, but weird experience. We can expect the Burton film to be very fantasy like with a character who does not appear to be like a human (Batman, Beetle juice). Before either the film or the credits start we see a 20th century fox advertisement. The advertisement is different to past adverts. The logo is the same, but we see snow falling around it. I acknowledged this and I believe it has a connection with the film by the indication of the snow. This also sets the tone. Its different and unconventional.  When the film starts we see the credits of the entire cast, which run over the beginning of the film. The credits are scissor-rific which hints at whats to come. They are also in an italic, thin font, like the writing for Citizen Kane. This also suggests and hints at horror because of the dark background and the scissor like credits. Scissors propose to me danger and implicate cutting whether to paper or something else. Whilst all this is going on we can hear a non-diegetic sound, which sounds eerie, but fantasy like. This gives a small clue in establishing the genre. The start of the film, in which the credits run over, is the establishment of some of the environment. Upon entrance to an unknown building it is as if we are going to be told a story (fantasy like). We see inventions, a staircase and a pair of scissors. The inventions are a point-of-view shot and also a tracking shot. This is because us, the audience has been introduced into a new environment and we are constructing a visual image of our surroundings. It gives us information, which later on in the film helps us to understand what has been going on in Edward Scissorhands life. The editing is straight cut and dissolving. This makes the audience keep guessing at whats to come. It also keeps the audiences interest because they want to know what happens. It is dark in the building, with low-key lighting, which produces a sharp contrast of dark and light areas on the screen as very deep, distinct shadows are formed. The effect of this is we become aware that there is a hint of horror in the film. The dark lighting effects cause the awareness.  Stars and other shapes appear on the screen one by one. They look like biscuits. The sound when the biscuits appear on the screen is unfriendly and unfamiliar. It is a non-diegetic sound. The biscuits on screen are fantasy like and the sound is horror like. This makes us wonder what is going to happen and keeps our interest because we think it is very odd that biscuits are appearing on the screen. What have biscuits got to do with anything? We are then focused on a pair of hands and the camera then gradually zooms away from them. They are pale and look set. The hands are gradually faded out until we can see them no more. The consequence of the hands is it leaves us the feeling of cold and death that has happened or going to occur.  Our attention is then drawn to an eye. It is a close-up shot and once again the camera moves away from the object it is focusing on, but this time in a spiral way. As the camera moves progressively outwards we can see the face of an old, pale, lifeless man. Once again horror is suggested here. Next, as the man fades and dissolves into the background, snow appears at the foreground. After a few frames of snow, the snow starts to fade and from the background appears a house on a hill (horror). The house looks haunted and later on in the film we discover this house, or mansion is where we saw the inventions and the old man. The view of the house, hill and snow looks like a snow dome. The fading and dissolving, and the background and foreground effects create a mysterious tone, once again keeping the audiences attention and interest. The house on the hill is another example and theme of horror. The distance from the house and the camera increases and we are now in a room. We know this because in front of us is a window with a woman looking out at the house. This is a point-of-view shot. We are now introduced to a character. It is the woman looking out of the window. We hear her speak for the first time. Her voice is friendly and aimed towards another new character. The voice of the woman speaking is diegetic and on screen. We now feel safe and secure in the house and our interest is kept by us wondering who these characters are and what they have to do with the film. The mise-en-scene of the room in which we are in with the two characters is brightly decorated, in vivid yellows. This is a contrast to the view of the house outside the window. The yellows make me feel that the characters in the room are nice and friendly, because if they werent I think the room would be decorated differently, perhaps in black.  In the room are a fire and a lamp. These are two light sources. The fire creates a sense of warmth and friendliness by the glow, which is also in contrast to the house outside. The camera follows the old woman to the bedside of our second character. The second character is a young girl. She is tucked in a double bed. The girl looks lost in the bed. This is ironic because the bed suggests security to the young girl. We learn of the relationship between the two characters when the little girl says, Why is it snowing Grandma?. The woman sets about telling the child about Edward Scissorhands. The audiences interest is still kept because we are now finding out about whom we think the film is all about (because of the name of the film).

Analysis of The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien - Essay Example The story exhibited the manner by which a soldier copes up with guilt. The author explored the concept of blame that soldiers in the battle field experience specifically when another soldier whom they are supporting and sharing their everyday experience would be wounded or killed. The chapter is about the day after the first death in a particular group of soldiers in Vietnam. The death of Kiowa came as a shock that taught the group about different lessons in life, specifically in such a dangerous situation. In the chapter â€Å"In the Field† O’Brien wrote: When a man died, there had to be blame. Jimmy Cross understood this. You could blame the war. You could blame the idiots who made the war. You could blame Kiowa for going to it. You could blame the rain. You could blame the river. You could blame the field, the mud, the climate. You could blame the enemy. You could blame the mortar rounds. You could blame people who were too lazy to read a newspaper, who were bored by the daily body counts, who switched channels at the mention of politics. You could blame the munitions makers or Karl Marx or a trick of fate or an old man in Omaha who forgot to vote (169-170). In the end of the chapter, one of the characters, Jim Cross, the leader of the group, contemplated on the concept of blame and the manner by which soldiers in war should overcome the guilt (O’Brien 170). It can be perceived that Jim Cross’ view is that blame can be considered as an unproductive feeling and concept since it cannot change or resolve anything. No matter who or what becomes the target of the blame it cannot change the fact that a negative event had already occurred. In the story blame had been carried by all the soldiers in the group regarding the death of one of them, Kiowa. Everyone has their own view regarding how the death should have been prevented if each one of them had acted differently. This is good in terms of the fact that everyone in the group had prov en their sense of responsibility, attachment and dedication to their brothers in the battlefield. There are two characters who specifically exhibited the greatest guilt. One is the soldier who had been the last person who had talked to Kiowa. He blames himself for turning on the light to show the picture of his girlfriend to Kiowa, which revealed the position of the group and triggered the bombing (169). Another is Cross himself who was thinking that his lack of dedication and heart in joining the forces has caused the life of Kiowa because of the fact that he had made a wrong decision of making the group camp out in low land without any form of cover. In addition, he ignored the warnings of people around him (161). The thought of putting the blame to every possible reasons came from Cross. He understood how guilt can affect the performance of soldiers in battle, thus, regardless of how much he wanted to blame himself, he thought of every possible factor he can think of to blame. It is futile and unproductive to put blame on any factor but it is the way of the emotional faculties of the body to cope with the lost of a comrade. Included in the factors that Cross blamed are the war and the people who made war, which can be considered as two of the most pointless factors he had thought about.
